Even though more and more phones are coming off the factory floor with GPS receivers in tow, there are still plenty of handsets in users' hands that don't have the foggiest inkling where they're located. Google Maps is still a great (and, perhaps more importantly, free) app even without the benefit of GPS reception -- but hey, why compromise? The latest beta rev of Google Maps for mobile adds the new "My Location" feature that can pull in your current whereabouts via either GPS or cell tower triangulation, a method that Google says will net you accuracy of around 1000 meters. The app visually distinguishes the modes by adding a large, lighter blue circle around the usual blue dot, indicating the margin of error while triangulating. Good enough for pedestrian navigation? Probably not, but still far better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick, we reckon.
