Nokia's N96 spotted in the wild?

That, friends, is an N96. Or, at least we're led to believe so. Judging by five mysterious images that surfaced over at Mobile-Review,
it appears that Nokia's N96 (which certainly shouldn't be considered
the final name at this point) has leaked out, and while no
specifications are available, it looks as if this thing is packing a
5-megapixel camera (with the obligatory Carl Zeiss lens), a dual LED
flash and a sexy black motif. Check out one more look after the jump.

Keepin' it real fake, part CIII: half Nokia, half HTC, all ripoff

As if the N73 wasn't already up for the "most knocked off cellphone of the century" award,
here we have yet another rip that wasn't even so kind as to stick
solely to the Nokia motif. Rather, the ZTC 8898 threw in a dash of HTC
to flavor things up, and apparently, this unit can even handle its fair
share of NES (SNES?) emulation. Specs wise, we're lookin' at a 2.5-inch
external display (and a 2.8-incher on the inside), dual SIM card slots,
built-in camera and a pair of janky speakers to boot. We understand
that buying both of the handsets this thing mimics wouldn't be cheap,
but seriously, don't do yourself the disservice of plunking down $189
on this.

Motorola sullies Ferrari's good name with branded Z8

So try and put yourself in a Ferrari owner's shoes, if just for a
moment. You're filthy rich; likely too rich for your own good, and
possibly rich enough to have extraordinarily eccentric taste. What
phone's in your pocket? A mere commoner's Motorola Z8? Of course not -- odds are you're sporting a Vertu or two
-- but Moto is hoping to keep you in the fold with a specially branded
version of the same, tired, old Z8 that launched nearly a year ago. For
what it's worth, the phone features all manner of Ferrari badging, gets
slathered in the classic rosso corsa that graces an
overwhelming majority of Ferrari's works of rolling art, and features
preloaded Ferrari media, but that really doesn't change the fact that
it's a flippin' Z8, now does it? Granted, this isn't the first time
Motorola has partnered with the legendary Italian marque having pushed out a branded MOTORAZR MAXX V6
back in the day, but something tells us Enzo drivers aren't carrying
those, either (just a hunch). Find it in the Ferrari Store and through
Moto's European retail channels starting in the first quarter.

Palm CEO Ed Colligan says "We're working on it," promises "breakthrough" devices

Palm's
latest quarterly results might have been pretty gloomy, with a loss of
$9.6M on revenue of $349M and an expected drop in revenue to $310M next
quarter, but according to CEO Ed Colligan, the ship is about to be
righted. Speaking to analysts during the company's financial results
conference call, Colligan said that a combination of cost-cutting
measures, a reduction in the number of devices in Palm's lineup, and
work on the next Palm OS would revive Palm's flagging fortunes. Ed also
said that there was "no acceptable excuse" for missing
the launch of the Treo 755p on Verizon in Q4, and that Palm was "done"
revising existing products -- instead focusing on "breakthrough"
devices and "revolutionary designs." We can only hope he's telling the
truth -- and of course, we've got some suggestions for him if he's out of ideas.

AT&T promises mobile TV "as early as possible" in 2008

So we know that AT&T slipped
its MediaFLO-based mobile TV launch from the end of 2007 out to early
'08, but just how "early" are we talking? Well, "as early as possible,"
to be specific. That rather unhelpful statement is all that's coming
out of AT&T for the moment regarding its go-live window for the
service, saying that testing is going "very, very well" but that it
wanted to take an extra timeout to "make sure the user experience is
absolutely optimal." As far as we're concerned, those statements are in
conflict with one another -- if they'd planned to launch in '07 and
everything's going well, what the heck's the hold up? At any rate, when
it does launch, it turns out that we'll be getting essentially the same
lineup MediaFLO offers through Verizon's VCAST TV presently, featuring
channels from Fox, NBC, ESPN, CBS, and MTV. That rubs us the wrong way
considering that AT&T's original press release
mentioned its intention to take advantage of advanced MediaFLO
capabilities like datacasting and music, so to summarize: less
functionality, later than originally expected. Everyone cool?

Android SDK frustrating developers due to bugs, lack of documentation

A month after Google launched the Android
SDK, it looks like unresolved bugs, poor documentation, and the lack of
a public issue-tracking system are causing some developers to say that
the platform "isn't ready for prime time." The lack of solid
documentation and unorganized feedback mechanism asides however, Ars
Technica's Ryan Paul took the SDK for a spin and found that it has a
lot of potential, saying "Despite some of the bugs and limitations in
the API, it is definitely a viable and effective platform for
application development," but that "it doesn't make it easy to create
applications that have a really polished look and feel." Given how much
bake time Android had before the announcement, it's a little strange
that Google let it out the door without at least proper documentation,
but there's still plenty of time -- we're not going to see any Android
devices for another year, after all.

More details on Samsung's t819 3G slider for T-Mobile

It looks like T-Mobile had a change of heart about the coloring of its next 3G device -- Samsung's t819 slider -- after it hit the FCC
recently, changing from a rather lovely medium blue to "coffee brown."
That got us to thinking: does a phone have to go back through the FCC
when it changes color? Probably not; in fact, we can think of plenty of
examples to the contrary. That seems a little odd considering that
color formulations could almost certainly affect SAR ratings, but
whatevs -- point is, Boy Genius Report has a little more info on the
midrange slider now. Besides the aforementioned color change, we now
know that T-Mobile expects to start offloading this bad boy come
January. Whether the carrier will actually start to admit that its 3G
phones are 3G by then... well, that's another story entirely.

Another version of the HTC Neon gets in the mix

Remember that NEON100 we spied via the FCC's loose lips a few weeks back? Turns out there's at least one more version of the Touch
variant being prepped -- but this time, the info comes from another
famously leaky source, the Bluetooth SIG. Details are extraordinarily
slim here since we don't even have the benefit of an RF test report,
but we do know that it'll support Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR (seeing how this is
the Bluetooth SIG's database and all). In a perfect world, this sucker
would turn out to be a Touch with triband HSDPA, but odds are, we
really won't know until HTC is good'n ready for us to know.

LG Voyager gets big honkin' firmware update

So, first the bad news: you've gotta trek all the way down to a Verizon shop to get your Voyager
updated to the latest rev. Now, the good: it's probably worthwhile.
LG's latest and greatest firmware for the Voyager superphone appears to
bring a host of fixes and enhancements ranging from better battery life
(or so they say, anyway) to an improved browsing experience. Let us
know how it goes if you go get 'er flashed, k?

T-Mobile, 3 holding hands for 3G

Despite an ongoing spat
between the UK's 3 and the whole lot of its larger rivals, the scrappy
3G-focused carrier has managed to bury the hatchet long enough with
T-Mobile to ink an agreement to share some towers. Virtually every
carrier across the world with WCDMA capability is struggling to find
the balance between buildout -- an extraordinarily expensive
proposition -- and profit, and it seems that collaborating with even
the fiercest rivals might be the way to go in the interest of expanding
footprint rapidly, keeping existing customers happy, and winning the
occasional data-hungry conquest. Not to mention that Orange and
Vodafone have already gone public with a similar agreement, and when
you're competing with a juggernaut like Voda in any segment, joining forces sounds like a good idea.

A teaser shot of Motorola's 5 megapixel multimedia maven?

Remember that Moto lineup for 2008 that was supposedly leaked
a couple months back? You know, the one that might just stand a chance
at breathing life into Moto's tired range and flagging financial
performance if it turns out to be even remotely legit? Well, IT168 has
what appears to be a shot -- albeit a relatively crappy, likely
rendered one -- of the X PIXL / Z12 slider that had been mentioned as a
part of that '08 roadmap, showing the 5 megapixel Kodak-branded cam
we'd heard about along with the obligatory xenon flash. Now clearly,
this shot is utterly trivial to fake, but we tend to give it a little
weight here if for no other reason than the fact that Moto pretty much has to get out a 5 megapixel cameraphone with name-brand optics at this point just to keep up with the Joneses.

Orange says unlocked iPhones are, in fact, unlocked

Some hubbub across the 'nets the past few days suggested that the unlocked iPhones being offered by Orange in France were -- of all things -- country
locked, a rather unusual (but still perfectly valid and real) form of
SIM lock that would require that the SIM of a French carrier be
installed in the phone. Now, by our calculation, this would've been
about the crappiest thing Apple and Orange could've done and still be
within the boundaries of French law requiring that phones be offered
unlocked. We certainly wouldn't put it past the terrible twosome, but
fortunately, it looks like the fears were a little overblown; iLounge
is claiming that they've confirmed with Orange that the unlocked units
are not country locked. We imagine it's not a big deal for the

Vodafone Germany rolls out Ericsson's eco-friendly cell equipment

For Ericsson
and for the world at large, the company's new Base Transceiver Station
Standby feature means a possible reduction of 1 million tons of carbon
dioxide emissions if the software upgrade were to be rolled out
globally. For Vodafone
Germany, it represents a power savings of 10 to 20 percent -- and
therefore an energy bill 10 to 20 percent lower -- and while we reckon
that's not quite as scrupulous a reason, it's still a win / win
situation as far as we're concerned. The so-called BTS Standby upgrade
is compatible with Ericsson tower equipment manufactured since 1995,
giving hope that it could end up seeing fairly rapid and widespread
acceptance across the world's GSM carriers, inching us toward
Ericsson's lofty CO2 emission reduction claim. Don't suppose Vodafone
would want to go with some of those tower tubes while they're at it, would they?
